Creating beautiful spaces and private hiding places

Current Project

Currently we are working on an entrance gate for a private residence. We will post pictures as they become available however here is a Sketchup drawing of the initial design.

The gate will be made of Mara Macho, which is a Brazilian Hardwood similar in appearance and durability to Mahogany and finished with three different shades of wood dye and two coats of West Systems Marine Epoxy. The hinges and latch will be made of stainless steel to survive the elements. The gate will stand 7' 6" tall and measure 18' wide.

We calculated the size of the footings based on the 400 Lb gates so that they would be able to support the weight of the gates and also any hurricane force winds that they would be subjected to here in Southwest Florida. We dug and poured the 3 yard footings all in one day so that the active driveway would not be blocked for more than just a few hours. The steel posts are  4" square tube steel 3/8" thick and are set 30" deep into the concrete.

The hinges are piano style Stainless Steel with ½” backer plates that have three adjustment bolts so that the gates can be fine tuned for a precise fit..

Here you can see the door stand that we used to support the large gates while we attached them to the hinges. This made it possible for just the two of us to safely support the gates while we worked on them.

After the gates were hung on the hinges and fine tuned they operated just as planned. The next step is to wrap the steel columns with wood and install some accent lighting and two large lamps on top of the columns. Two automated closers will also be added to finish the project. We will post photos of the finished gate as they are ready.
